Weekly Roundup: Sealed Air acquires flexible packaging presence in Asia, RKW launches “super sustainable” shrink film

22 Feb 2019 --- In packaging news this week, Sealed Air has expanded its Asia Pacific presence with the acquisition of MGM, a printing and laminating flexible packaging specialist headquartered in the Philippines. In another big business move, pharmaceutical packaging supplier ACG Group has opened a US$93 million capsules manufacturing plant in Brazil. Innovative new launches this week included RKW’s “super sustainable” stretchable shrink film, which is unique in that it can be cut smaller than the pallet size and pulled over the palletized goods.

Waste to paste: VTT Finland develops “revolutionary” recycling device

12 Feb 2019 --- VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed the first prototype of a cylindrical extruder which has shown promise in “revolutionizing the processing of recyclable materials.” The extruder can be used, for example, to turn problematic textiles and plastics as well as food waste into pellets. VTT say that the first prototype has already exceeded the industrial steering group's expectations during initial testing. VTT is currently looking for a partner to commercialize the technology.

Watermarks can harmonize sorting processes amid regulation squeeze: Petcore Conference 2019 review, Part 2

11 Feb 2019 --- One of the key findings at the Petcore Europe Conference, held in Brussels last week, was that in order to achieve the stringent recycling targets set out in the EU Plastics Strategy, the industry must collaborate more efficiently to develop harmonized, efficient sorting processes. Since most recycling problems can be brought back to the sorting process, cracking sorting will crack recycling, according to Gian De Belder, Packaging Technologist, Sustainable Packaging Development at Procter & Gamble (P&G). One potential breakthrough technology that could add efficiency and precision to the sorting process is watermarking.

Fully automated BreadBot really is “the best thing since sliced bread,” says developer

10 Jan 2019 --- Family-owned The Wilkinson Baking Company has unveiled The BreadBot – the world’s first fully automated bread making machine – at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in Las Vegas (CES). The BreadBot turns flour into loaves all on its own, producing bread which is fresh, healthy, preservative-free and eco-friendly in comparison to center aisle bread. The system is aimed at re-establishing an “emotional connection with the shopper” that has been lost in an age of industrial food production.

Schubert fills and packs 160 croissants a minute in single fully-automated system

01 Nov 2018 --- Gerhard Schubert has aided Italian, family-owned company, San Giorgio Dolce & Salato, in its ambitions to be the first manufacturer to introduce pre-baked, filled and frozen croissants to the gastronomic market, with a purpose-built automated processing system. Schubert’s system gently injects different fillings into the baked goods and efficiently combines this operation with the final packaging process via sophisticated pick-and-place robots attached with gentle grippers. Thanks to this automation solution, San Giorgio Dolce & Salato can fill and package 160 croissants per minute.

09 Oct 2018 --- Beverage multi-packing smart systems provider WaveGrip has helped increase Royal Docks Brewing Company’s beer output with a new packing applicator and brand defining colored carrier system. Having previously partnered with a canning company, Royal Docks switched to its own canning line in 2017. Recently, however, it has required a faster and less labor-intensive solution to keep pace with its ongoing growth: The WaveGrip G1, with speeds of up to 100 cans-per-minute (cpm) and ability to pack a full range of can sizes with minimal downtime.

“Ultra-clean” shelf life extension from GEA hermetically sealed control valve

18 Sep 2018 --- GEA is expanding its D-tec valve line with the new GEA D-tec P/DV control valve for ultraclean applications in the food, beverage and dairy industries. This allows reliable control of process parameters such as volume flow, pressure, temperature and filling level of a vessel. Due to the hermetically sealing D-tec stem diaphragm, the valve is said to achieve a higher standard of hygiene. BillerudKorsnäs expands MG paper production with US$150 million investment

06 Sep 2018 --- BillerudKorsnäs has opened one of Europe's largest and most efficient MG paper machines at Skärblacka production unit outside Norrköping in Sweden in an investment valued at US$150 million. The new MG machines are set to increase production capacity to 460,000 tons/year, of which 180,000 tons will be MG paper, making the mill the largest facility for machine glazed kraft paper in Europe.
