Nanotechnology in active packaging: Willing consumers still wary of “contamination,” survey finds

21 Feb 2019 --- Consumers are increasingly willing to use nanotechnology-based solutions in food packaging, but they are wary of how the essential oils – used to prevent spoilage – may “contaminate” foods, a report carried out by the EU-funded NanoPack Project has revealed. The survey informs NanoPack’s continued testing of the technology, which is forecast to reach Technology Readiness Level 7 (Demonstration in an operational environment) by the end of the project (December 2019).

Sustainable snacking: Pladis extends TerraCycle initiative before Christmas biscuit boom

Pringles can needs redesign not “fudge” recycling scheme, says UK Recycling Association exec

06 Nov 2018 --- The UK Recycling Association has criticized Kellogg’s Pringles can recycling scheme, referring to it as a “fudge that doesn’t solve any issues.” Kellogg’s announced last month that it had entered an agreement with recycling company TerraCycle, enabling consumers to recycle Pringles cans using Freepost labels, with the sender rewarded with a charitable donation for each can which can be redeemed at a school, charity or non-profit of choice. The cans are then recycled and the resulting pellets used to create new products such as benches and fence posts.

Kellogg’s launches self-run Pringles recycling scheme as part of improved sustainability action

26 Oct 2018 --- Kellogg’s is implementing increased sustainability throughout its UK operations with the launch of several new packaging measures, most notably, a new solution to allow people to recycle Pringles cans and the introduction of recycle-ready cereal pouches. Such measures make up part of the cereal and snack giants’ ambitions to achieve 100 percent reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2025. This goal, which is being rolled out to all Kellogg’s global markets including the UK, builds on its current sustainable packaging commitment to continue to ensure 100 percent of all timber-based packaging is either recycled or certified as sustainably sourced.

Walkers launch UK’s first crisp packet recycling scheme after public call to action

08 Oct 2018 --- PepsiCo's Walkers brand is set to launch the UK’s first nationwide recycling scheme for crisp packets. Consumers will be encouraged to either drop off their packets at one of the hundreds of public access collection points that will be developed all around the country or alternatively post them for free directly to TerraCycle for recycling. The move comes after intense public pressure for Walkers to address the volume of plastic waste generated through its packaging.

17 Sep 2018 --- Compostable and renewable packaging film specialists Futamura grabbed headlines at Packaging Innovations 2018 in London with its 100 percent plastic-free, compostable crisp bag made from barrier film NatureFlex. The bag is the first of its kind on the European market, originally launched in Germany. Futamura collaborated with packaging manufacturer Bio4Pack to create the pack for German organic crisps producer, myCHIPSBOX. The bag was displayed on the Packaging Innovations Showcase as well as the Futamura stand.

The “Love Notes” are an accessible version of the writable wrapper on Rice Krispies Treats and available in two forms: Braille stickers and re-recordable audio boxes.
