Clever Cup: Costa and Barclaycard launch UK’s first reusable contactless payment coffee cup

10 Dec 2018 --- Costa Coffee and Barclaycard have collaborated to launch the UK’s first reusable coffee-cup with integrated contactless payment technology. Powered by Barclaycard’s bPay technology, Costa Coffee’s Clever Cup allows users to make purchases with the cup, top up their in-store credit balance and track payments online or via a dedicated app on both iPhone and Android devices. Launched last month in Costa Coffee stores across the UK, this reusable innovation is expected to decrease the volume of discarded coffee cups.

Nespresso to produce “world’s first” responsibly-sourced aluminum coffee capsules

20 Nov 2018 --- Nespresso claims that it will be the first company to use responsibly-sourced aluminum, supplied by Rio Tinto, to produce its coffee capsules. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together, allowing Nespresso’s capsule manufacturers to fulfill a commitment of sourcing 100 percent sustainable aluminum by 2020.

Kicking an unsustainable habit? Sunflower husk based biodegradable coffee capsules launched in world first

16 Oct 2018 --- Biodegradable coffee capsules that consumers can dispose of in their home compost have been developed by Golden Compound, in cooperation with Alpla. The capsules are made from Golden Compound green material; comprised from the natural fibers of sunflower seed shells. The capsule and filter fleece is completely biodegradable within a maximum of six months and is free from aluminum and genetically modified organisms.

Coffee waste to coffee cups: Researcher harnesses potential of coffee grounds for biodegradable plastic

29 Aug 2018 --- Waste coffee grounds could be used to produce biodegradable plastics, a student from Macquarie University, Australia, has found in his Ph.D. research. Researcher Dominik Kopp developed a method to turn coffee grounds into lactic acid, which can then be used to produce biodegradable plastics.

Self-heating beverage technology poised for market launch

24 Jul 2018 --- Self-heating beverage technology company HeatGenie has closed US$6 million in funding to facilitate launches in the ready-to-drink (RTD) marketplace. The funding is led by ARTIS Labs with additional financing from Almanac Investments and private investors. With this round of funding, HeatGenie will complete product development and move into commercialization, working together with ready-to-drink beverage brands to launch in the marketplace.

“Heat&Go”: SIG launches microwaveable carton for mobile drinking convenience

19 Jul 2018 ---  SIG has developed a new microwaveable aseptic carton designed specifically for on-the-go consumption of liquid dairy, non-carbonated soft drinks and broth with low viscosity products. Banking on bottles, UK debuts recycling return scheme

29 Mar 2018 --- England will introduce a deposit return system (DRS) on all plastic, glass and metal drinks containers, the UK minister for the Environment, Michael Gove has announced. Such schemes have successfully been running in neighboring countries Germany and Sweden and Scotland announced a similar plan last year. These schemes have managed to boost collection rates for beverage packaging to over 90 percent in some states. The announcement has been met with positive feedback amid concerns over the potential costs of implementation.

26 Mar 2018 --- Starbucks has announced a US $10 million investment in a partnership with Loop circle to deliver compostable, recyclable cups within three years. The global giant has battled campaigner pressure in the past weeks, due to accusations of them making environmental pledges in vain. These included a commitment to providing 100 percent recyclable cups and selling 25 percent of drinks in reusable cups, both by 2015. Campaigners flagged that the deadline had passed without the goals being “fulfilled.”

Chiltern Railways takes industry-first step to reduce plastic waste

01 Mar 2018 --- Chiltern Railways has announced that it will be the first train operator to recycle coffee cups at stations in a bid to reduce plastic waste. Simply Cups – who are servicing the initiative – estimate that across the UK, just one in 400 of the 2.5 billion disposable cups used each year is recycled. In response, Chiltern, an Arriva UK Trains company, have decided to tackle the issue as part of its commitment to addressing environmental challenges and hopes to set the standard for British train operators.
